Orvieto has a rich and fascinating history dating back to ancient Etruscan civilization. It is known for its extraordinary historic center, characterized by narrow medieval streets, picturesque squares, and well-preserved historical monuments.
One of its focal points is the majestic Duomo, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture with a facade adorned in polychrome marble. The city is also famous for its namesake white wine, Orvieto Classico, a fine wine produced in the surrounding area. The local cuisine is equally delightful, featuring Umbrian specialties such as wild boar pappardelle, porchetta, and pecorino cheeses. Orvieto is also known for its St. Patrick’s Well, a Renaissance engineering marvel. Built in the 16th century, the well was designed to provide adequate water reserves in case of siege. It has a double helical ramp that allowed mules to carry water from the bottom to the top.
Perched on a tufa cliff overlooking the surrounding countryside, Orvieto offers spectacular panoramic views of the valley below. This elevated position contributes to its unique charm and evocative atmosphere.
